Acumatica has named Jason (JJ) James chief information officer, adding him to its executive committee to lead the company’s IT organization.

James joins from Aptos Retail, where he ran strategy, operations, and security for multi-cloud SaaS platforms across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform. He previously served as CIO at Net Health and Optima Healthcare Solutions.

James said his focus will be “putting AI to work across Acumatica while keeping security at the core.” CEO John Case cited his experience managing IT “through periods of growth and transformation.”

Acumatica’s AI Push Raises the Stakes for Internal IT

The appointment follows the 2026 R2 release a week earlier, which adds AI Assistant and AI Automation capabilities that answer business questions, detect anomalies, and trigger prompt-driven workflows inside the ERP.

A new Model Context Protocol (MCP) connection lets customers link Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and other compatible AI tools to their Acumatica data. According to Acumatica, role-based permissions and field-level data masking carry over to those connections, and IT keeps governance and auditability for every query.

Acquisitions and Global Engineering Widen the IT Remit

Acumatica has also been adding businesses and locations.

In August, it opened a Global Capability Center in Hyderabad, India, with more than 30 employees at launch. In July, it acquired Vertrax, a longtime partner that builds cloud-native software for fuel and energy distribution.

James led IT integration for mergers and acquisitions in earlier CIO roles and wrote Make IT Work: An IT Playbook for Mergers and Acquisitions.

What This Means for ERP Insiders

Ask Acumatica about its IT plans at renewal. Find out how the new CIO’s priorities will affect security, uptime, and support. Writing the answers down gives you something to check against at the next review.

Decide which AI tools can connect first. Before turning on MCP, choose which AI assistants are allowed in and what data each one can see. Starting small lets teams try AI queries without opening up sensitive data.

Keep track of add-ons that change owners. If you use Vertrax or other partner products, ask how support and updates will work after an acquisition. Knowing early helps you plan upgrades without surprises.
