Microsoft has announced a public preview of its Power Platform Managed Identity support for Dataverse plug-ins. These new features will allow customers and partners to connect Dataverse plug-ins to Azure resources supporting managed identities, eliminating the need to manage credentials and reducing the risk of unauthorized data access.
Having announced its experimental preview of Microsoft Dataverse low code plug-ins at its Build event in October of last year, Microsoft continues to support the development of its Dataverse plug-in offerings to keep users up-to-date with the latest enhancements and features. Plug-ins provide additional functionality to software programs without requiring the user to modify the core code of the program, enabling users to customize their experience in a modular way that tailors the experience to meet their specific needs.
Power Platform Managed Identity leverages workload identities based on Federated Identity Credentials, which provides enhanced security and control. In addition to this, it enables users to apply Azure policies without the hassle of credential management.
Users have two options for provisioning of managed identities: User Assigned Managed Identity (UAMI) that allows Dataverse plug-ins to use this identity to connect to Azure resources that support managed identity, or Application Registration, that provisions the application in Microsoft Entra ID so users can establish an application context and Identity to connect to Azure resources supporting managed identity.
Leveraging managed identities, the connection processes increase security and become more streamlined, as it eliminates the risks associated with credential management. Furthermore, this feature allows Dataverse plug-ins to access Azure resources seamlessly and securely, enhancing overall efficiency and security.
Microsoft’s Power Platform Managed Identity support for Dataverse plug-ins is available in public preview to all customers in Microsoft’s Public Cloud.
