Microsoft will end supporting its flagship SMB ERP product, Dynamics GP’s legacy ERP system in September 2029, joining companies like SAP and Oracle that have announced end dates for their legacy products.
The Redwood-headquartered software giant announced in a blog post on September 25, 2024, that security patches for Dynamics GP will be available until April 2031.
Mike Morton, vice president, Microsoft Dynamics Business Central noted that the company and its partners would continue to support those running the legacy system until 2029, while encouraging users to move to its cloud ERP product, Dynamics 365 Business Central.
He added that the cloud platform integrated artificial intelligence (AI) tools to help users automate routine tasks and provide predictive insights for faster decision-making. Moreover, Dynamics 365 Business Central helps enterprises to leverage the full potential of their technology stack and raise business productivity, Morton said.
Soaring to the cloud
As AI-led processes gain ground, more ERP providers are encouraging their users to move to the cloud. In March, Oracle noted in a blog post that its PeopleSoft product would continue to receive support until 2035, while urging its users to migrate to Oracle Fusion Cloud application. The company indicated that it had extended support for this legacy product for the past six years and would continue to do so “until Oracle’s strategy and support for PeopleSoft changes.”
ERP giant SAP has also announced that maintenance for previous versions of its ERP systems will expire by December 31, 2027, leaving those who have not yet migrated to SAP S/4HANA around three years to migrate to the new system.
