Anthropic is joining OpenAI in treating healthcare as a frontline market for consumer and enterprise AI, launching Claude for Healthcare with record-aware tools, HIPAA-ready infrastructure, and deep connectors into core health data sources. The move confirms that major AI players now see health data, coverage rules, and clinical documentation as core surfaces for generative AI rather than experimental cases.
Claude for Healthcare
Anthropic is rolling out Claude for Healthcare as a healthcare- and life-sciences-focused layer on top of its existing Claude models, adding connectors and tools so the assistant can work directly with medical records and industry-standard data, NBC News January 11 reports. In the US, new health records features are in beta for Claude Pro and Max users, with Apple Health and Android Health Connect integrations also rolling out in beta via the Claude iOS and Android apps, reportedly allowing individuals to connect lab results, health records, and fitness data for summarization, pattern spotting, and appointment prep.
For enterprises, Fierce Healthcare January 12 reports, Claude for Healthcare includes HIPAA-ready infrastructure and native integrations to commonly used datasets such as the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Coverage Database (including local and national coverage determinations), ICD‑10 diagnosis and procedure codes, the National Provider Identifier Registry, and PubMed’s 35 million‑plus biomedical articles. Anthropic also added Agent Skills for FHIR development to help developers connect healthcare systems faster and with fewer errors, aiming to improve interoperability without forcing all data into a single repository.
Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Anthropic’s head of biology and life sciences, described Claude as an “orchestrator” that can consolidate personal information, medical records, and insurance data so users are not stitching everything together alone. He argued that instead of trying to centralize all health records in one place, Claude should do the hard work of interfacing with disparate systems and tools across providers, payers, and life sciences.
Safety Positioning, Early Adopters
Anthropic stresses that health data shared with Claude is excluded from model memory and not used to train future systems, and that users can disconnect or edit permissions at any time. The company presents Claude for Healthcare as a “plug-and-play” solution that respects strict compliance requirements, offering deployments in a HIPAA-compliant way and highlighting that Claude is available through all major cloud providers.
The company is positioning healthcare and life sciences as one of its largest strategic bets, with existing customers including Banner Health, Stanford Health Care, Novo Nordisk, Sanofi, AbbVie, Genmab, and startups like Qualified Health. These organizations are using Claude to automate administrative workloads such as clinical documentation, regulatory submissions, clinical trial analysis, and other high-volume, text-heavy tasks. Executives from Banner Health and Qualified Health cited to Fierce Healthcare Anthropic’s focus on AI safety, reduced hallucinations, and its “Constitutional AI” approach as key reasons for adoption, noting that in healthcare “there’s basically no room for error.”
Anthropic’s acceptable use policy requires that a qualified professional review content or decisions when Claude is used for “healthcare decisions, medical diagnosis, patient care, therapy, mental health, or other medical guidance,” reinforcing the model is meant to amplify clinicians rather than replace them. Kauderer-Abrams said that while tools like Claude can save “90% of the time” on many tasks, human experts must stay in the loop for critical use cases where every detail matters.
Consumer Health Assistants
On the consumer side, Claude’s health integrations echo—but do not duplicate—OpenAI’s ChatGPT Health. In the US, Claude Pro and Max subscribers can give Claude secure access to health records and wellness apps via new HealthEx and Function connectors, with Apple Health and Android Health Connect support rolling out in beta. Individuals can ask Claude to summarize their medical history, explain test results in plain language, spot trends across fitness and health metrics, or prepare questions for upcoming appointments.
This sits alongside the enterprise connectors: Claude can pull coverage rules from the CMS Coverage Database, verify coding via ICD‑10, check provider details in the NPI Registry, and surface relevant literature from PubMed, with additional life sciences connectors to platforms like Medidata, ClinicalTrials.gov, bioRxiv, medRxiv, and Open Targets. Anthropic’s goal is to have Claude act as a collaborator through all stages of R&D and clinical operations, taking on increasingly large chunks of work while remaining governed by strong safety and oversight requirements.

Healthcare AI is crystallizing around connector-rich, HIPAA-ready platforms.
