The existing relationship between Cognizant and Orica will be extended on the basis of further aiding Orica’s Net Zero Strategy. The partnership sees an ESG data strategy and a digital platform providing real-time reporting and forecasting of scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Orica has been operating for nearly 150 years, and is currently one of the world’s leading mining and infrastructure solutions providers. The partnership with Cognizant will help to achieve Orica’s Net Zero Strategy of reaching net zero emissions by 2050.
The agreement entails Orica’s existing technology investments being leveraged, such as their partnership with Microsoft Azure Data Lake. Orica will be provided with an ESG platform which will generate structured, unstructured and real-time data on their GHG emissions. This will enable them to monitor and report their GHG emissions reductions, and track the origination of Australian Carbon Credit Units with ease.
Thus far, Orica has installed catalyst abatement technology at its nitric acid production facility at Kooragang Island, hence potentially leading to a significant reduction in GHG emissions, specifically in nitrous oxide. The Kooragang Island decarbonization initiative is forecasted to reduce 4.7 million tons of CO2e in total by 2030. The expected cumulative reduction of this project will be equivalent to 1 percent of Australia’s annual carbon footprint.
“As a major supplier to mining and construction companies, Orica also has an important role to play in reducing overall greenhouse gas emissions,” said Chris Crozier, chief information officer, Orica. “As such, we needed a trusted partner with a similar focus on ESG goals and sustainability and one with an expertise in data analysis, AI, design and IoT.”
Similarly, Jonathan Smith, sustainability lead, ANZ, Cognizant stated that: “Core to our company’s purpose of engineering modern businesses to improve everyday life is our commitment to embed sustainability into our thinking, decisions, and actions.”
“Data is a crucial factor that allows companies to analyze their current emissions and measure against ESG goals over time, and we are incredibly proud of having been appointed as the data, AI and analytics partner for Orica to be able to measure Orica’s ESG efforts to reduce its carbon footprint.”
