IBM has acquired StepZen, creators of a GraphQL server with unique architecture that helps developers build API fast and with less code.

The acquisition closed on February 6, 2023; financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

Developed by a team of industry veterans, StepZen takes a declarative approach to programming, resulting in smaller and more intuitive code, better runtime performance, and faster time to value. With StepZen, developers can benefit from an easier way to build GraphQL API with the server being compatible with other API approaches and is available as-a-Service. As part of this acquisition, StepZen’s team and technology will become part of the IBM Software unit.

StepZen is IBM’s first acquisition of 2023 as the company continues to bolster its hybrid cloud and AI capabilities following the acquisition of 30 companies in 2022 including: Databand.ai, Octo, Neudesic, and many more.

Customers of StepZen include: DataStax, HPE, Komax, Sight Consulting, and more.

This acquisition is an example of how IBM continues to drive innovation through delivering data, AI, and automation solutions needed by businesses in the hybrid cloud era. StepZen complements IBM’s development in key areas, such as integration, API management, data fabric, and data management.

In a recent IBM blog, Kareem Yusuf, senior vice president of product management and growth, IBM Software, commented: “We believe StepZen’s innovative technology for GraphQL API creation complements the innovations IBM is driving in API Connect to enable businesses to build better digital experiences for their clients.”
