Built on Microsoft Dataverse and Power Platform, Dynamics 365 Sustainability gives IT teams a way to extend it, with the Dataverse Model Context Protocol server as a foundation for agent experiences.

Microsoft is bringing Microsoft Sustainability Manager, its carbon, water, and waste management product, into the Dynamics 365 ERP portfolio, where Microsoft refers to it as Microsoft Dynamics 365 Sustainability.

The product records environmental data, calculates emissions, and prepares disclosures. Microsoft says the move ties that work to the financial and operational processes behind environmental impact, so sustainability data is more useful across the business.

Recording and Reporting Environmental Data

Dynamics 365 Sustainability pulls activity data together and applies calculation models and emission factors to produce Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions. A shared sustainability data model gives that information one structure, which Microsoft says helps maintain context and traceability from source activity through calculation and analysis.

Scope 3 emissions often depend on information from suppliers and other value-chain partners, where company-specific data can be hard to obtain. The product collects partner emissions and product carbon footprint data to feed those calculations.

On the reporting side, the product turns environmental data into structured metrics for internal analysis and external disclosure. Teams can assess disclosure requirements, prepare quantitative and qualitative information, collaborate across the reporting process, and keep supporting evidence. Microsoft says the product supports frameworks including the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, Global Reporting Initiative standards, and IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards, so teams can prepare disclosures.

Green Ledger View Aims to Link Emissions to Finance Data

April Olson, Chief Product Officer for Dynamics 365 Finance, Human Resources, and Sustainability, notes that many of the activities behind environmental impact are tied to financial and operational processes.

As a result, Microsoft is deepening the connection between Dynamics 365 Sustainability and its ERP applications, including greater interoperability with Dynamics 365 Finance and a green ledger view designed to bring financial and sustainability insights together.

Olson offers two hypothetical examples. A procurement team evaluating suppliers could weigh sustainability information next to cost, availability, quality, lead time, and risk. A manufacturer investigating an emissions hotspot could connect a rise to changes in materials, production, energy use, or supplier activity. Olson adds that sustainability decisions do not all become ERP transactions; each side gains the other’s context.

Where Sustainability Fits in Microsoft’s ERP Portfolio

Sustainability data enters an ERP that Microsoft describes as composable, connected, and agentic. Its ERP solutions page lists Dynamics 365 Finance, Supply Chain Management, Project Operations, Human Resources, Commerce, and Business Central as products, and names greenhouse gas tracking and reporting among its capabilities.

Dynamics 365 Sustainability is built on Microsoft Dataverse and Power Platform. The Dataverse Model Context Protocol server lets agents and other compatible clients work with Dataverse data under that environment’s security controls.

Copilot Studio makers can add the server as an agent tool. In Olson’s example, an AI-assisted experience could identify a purchase-invoice file and map its fields for a Scope 3 calculation. The Microsoft Sustainability Manager page labels its Copilot features as preview, and the ERP page does the same for its autonomous agents.

What This Means for ERP Insiders

Emissions records now sit beside the records that drive them. Sustainability data joins finance and supply chain data in one portfolio. Microsoft’s argument is that environmental performance is tied to purchasing, production, and logistics, which positions the ERP as the place where those decisions and their consequences meet.

Disclosure needs traceable data. Microsoft pairs a shared data model with supporting evidence kept in the reporting process, aimed at tracing a reported number back to its source. Companies reporting under several frameworks need numbers that withstand scrutiny, and traceability becomes part of the product’s job.

Agents are reaching sustainability work. The agent approach in Microsoft’s ERP line now has a path to environmental data, with the Dataverse server described as the foundation for agent experiences on sustainability records. The stake for customers is whether agents working with emissions records carry the same governance controls as the ERP estate.
