The biggest reveals and announcements from Amazon re:Invent 2024

Amazon AWS and DXC Technology

Key Takeaways

Amazon announced the launch of Amazon Nova, a new collection of foundation models for AWS AI technology, which enhances existing services like Amazon Bedrock, providing capabilities for text, image and video processing as well as multimedia content generation.

The integration of Amazon Q Developer with GitLab enhances the development cycle by introducing AI-driven features that streamline complex tasks, aiding developers in code review and unit testing within a collaborative environment.

Amazon and SAP have collaborated to launch the GROW with SAP solution on the AWS marketplace, combining their expertise to accelerate cloud ERP adoption while integrating Amazon Bedrock with SAP's technology platform.

It’s been one hell of a busy week for Amazon Web Services; Amazon’s re:Invent 2024 conference returned to Las Vegas and initiated a constant sequence of reveals and keynotes, ending on December 6. While AI obviously dominates a lot of content, ERP Today gathered the most noteworthy announcements from Amazon re:Invent 2024.

New generation of foundation models for AWS AI tech

Amazon has already shown a dedication to AI-enhanced services and delivering GenAI solutions with Amazon Bedrock, Rufus and Alexa. The next step, according to Amazon, is the creation of Amazon Nova, a collection of new-generation foundation models for AWS AI technology.

Amazon Bedrock, the managed service that makes foundation models from leading AI companies partnered with Amazon available through a single API, has been integrated with all the new Amazon Nova offerings. The new Nova capabilities include text, image and video processing as prompts, with the ability to also generate videos and other multimedia content.

Amazon Q Developer enhances GitLab DevSecOps with GenAI

Amazon Q Developer integrates GenAI into the development cycle, which can help maintain focus while accelerating a range of development tasks. GitLab, one of the world’s leading DevSecOps platforms with a vast community of developers, is collaborating with Amazon to introduce GitLab Duo with Amazon Q.

According to Amazon, the new integration should transform GitLab Duo into a collaborative development experience powering AI-driven DevSecOps. The new software can assist complex, multi-step tasks like feature development and codebase upgrades, while also being able to review code and offer capabilities for unit testing.

SAP and AWS join forces to create GenAI-enhanced cloud development platform

Two of the industry’s giants have combined expertise and resources to build on an ongoing collaboration, with both SAP and AWS set to benefit significantly. Enterprise-platform specialist SAP wants to accelerate customer adoption of its cloud services and apps, and Amazon Web Services wants to increase how many people leverage its infrastructure.

As a result, the cloud ERP adoption solution GROW with SAP is now available on the AWS marketplace, marking it as the first third-party marketplace through which the solution is available. The collaboration is an integration between Amazon Bedrock and SAP’s tech platform.

Next generation of SageMaker set to introduce new capabilities

As a response to customer needs, Amazon revealed the next generation of Amazon Sagemaker, aiming to provide fast SQL analytics, petabyte-scale data processing, data exploration and integration, machine-learning model development and training and GenAI in a single, integrated platform.

New SageMaker capabilities include SageMaker Unified Studio, a single data and AI development environment that simplifies the data search process for customers, SageMaker Catalog, which provides easy permissions management and control across models, tools and data sources, and SageMaker Lakehouse, a means in which users can access data from several different data lakes in a unified platform.

Hope to boost customer and partner loyalty with Buy with AWS button

It’s been two years since Amazon introduced the arguably revolutionary ‘Buy with Prime’ button, a system that allowed premium subscribers to purchase items through Amazon despite finding the item on a different website. Looking to bring a similar kind of revolution to its cloud-based industry, Amazon Web Services is introducing a ‘Buy with AWS’ button for cloud software partners to embed on their sites, with customers able to take advantage of previously approved discounts.

For software companies to have permission to embed the new button, they need to sell their solutions and apps through the AWS marketplace. Keeping up with Microsoft and Google, Amazon reduced fees to 3 percent, in some cases lower, this year.

Amazon re:Invent has made it clear that machine learning and GenAI are the future for AWS services and enhancements. Despite being the leading provider of cloud infrastructure services and pulling in over $100bn in revenue in the last four quarters, Amazon is still in a deep AI rivalry with Microsoft.

Microsoft and OpenAI share an exclusivity deal but AWS CEO, Matt Garman, despite the deal, believes that true business growth in this area is achieved through a multiple-model approach.

“A lot of times people are thinking about – there’s just going to be this one model, and I want to have the one model that’s going to be the most powerful, and the one model to rule them all. And as you’ve seen over the last year, there isn’t one model that’s the best at everything,” Garman said.

“There’s a whole ton of these operating out there, and our goal is – how do we help customers use the very best?” Garman continued. “It doesn’t have to be one thing. It’s not just one. And we don’t think that there’s one best database. We don’t think there’s one best compute platform or processor. We don’t think that there’s one best model. It’s across that whole set.”
